The office of Deacon as set forth in the Scripture is one of sympathy, witness and service after the example of Jesus Christ.  It is the duty of the deacons to minister to those who are in need, to the sick, to the friendless, and to any who are in distress.

Through the generous donations of the congregation, the Board of Deacons continues to serve the needs of the church and the community. The Board of Deacons serves communion to those unable to attend church services.  This outreach is a blessing for homebound members, their families, and the deacons and elders who communicate the message of that day’s church service and serve the elements of communion.

Each November we collect food to prepare Thanksgiving baskets for the needy in our community.  We supplement the food donations with groceries we purchase using Deacons funds.  We then put together the Thanksgiving baskets and deliver them to individuals and organizations that help in the distribution of the baskets.

The Board of Deacons, when complete, has twelve members, elected to three year terms by the members of First Presbyterian Church.  Each deacon looks after a parish comprised of about twenty members and friends of the church, assists in communion, attends meetings, and performs or has input in other related missions and responsibilities of the board.
